Back to basics: the Nicene Creed part 1

Kevin Francis | Blogroll, Common Prayers | Sunday, November 4th, 2007

The Latin:

Credo in unum Deum, Patrem omnipotentem, factorem caeli et terrae, visibilium omnium et invisibilium.
Et in unum Dominum Iesum Christum, Filium Dei unigenitum, et ex Patre natum ante omnia saecula. Deum de Deo, Lumen de Lumine, Deum verum de Deo vero, genitum non factum, consubstantialem Patri; per quem omnia facta sunt.

The English:

I believe in one God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth, and of all things visible and invisible.
And in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only begotten Son of God, born of the Father before all ages. God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, one in being with the Father; through Whom all things were made.

[Consubstantialem meaning 'of the same substance'. Source: Thesaurum Precum Latinarum. Over to Godzdogz for a complete recitation; that is, of course, if you cannot already play it from here.]

Here’s something nice

All the Latin prayers and litanies seem to be here, at the Thesaurus Precum Latinarum.

The Latin:

Eius in obitu nostra praesentia muniamur.

The English:

May his presence strengthen us in the hour of our death.

Proceed to this website and read the title page, which asserts that you don’t even have to learn Latin to read much of the Vulgate, because English is so well based in Latin. That’s absolutely correct. They have the entire Vulgate available online.

Some nice Latin podcasts

Some nice Latin recordings from the Cafeteria is Closed, containing:

“…various standard prayers in Latin and English, with some musical examples and translations, pronunciation and so forth.”

It’s high time to learn, especially since Papa really thinks you should.

Would you like to learn Latin?

There are some Latin primers available at TextKit. They are in the grammar school format, with exercises after each small lesson. Lesson by lesson, at least the basic Christian prayers will start making sense. Here is one particularly nice book.
